Like the bride’s ex-boyfriend jumping up to offer an impromptu speech in the middle of the wedding, Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop, has warned anyone involved with Android that Google buying Motorola is bad news for them.
Even more unsurprisingly, he says Nokia’s decision to team up with Microsoft to build Windows Phone devices is vindicated by Google’s move. Read on for Elop’s tale of impending Android horror…
Speaking at a seminar in Helsinki, Elop attempted to stoke concerns that Motorola rivals like Samsung and HTC will be left behind. He said: “If I happened to be someone who was an Android manufacturer or an operator or anyone with a stake in that environment, I would be picking up my phone and calling certain executives at Google to say ‘I see signs of danger ahead.’”
Getting into his stride, Elop concluded that Google grabbing Motorola proves that the world needs Nokia Windows Phone devices more than ever: “The very first reaction I had was to realise the importance of the third ecosystem and the importance of the partnership that we announced on February 11. It is more clear than ever before.”
What do you think of Elop’s comments? Is he right to say that Android device manufacturers should be worried? Or is he just shouting for attention?
